Unit 6
Investigating Buildings and Building Words and Sentences-April 27- June 9
This six week unit invites students to investigate buildings, how they look, what they are made of and how they are built. They will explore their community and record the types of buildings that are in their neighborhood and in the school’s neighborhood. They will look for shapes, patterns, similarities and differences in size and color. In math, they will discover 3-D shapes and how they can be used in constructing buildings. In literacy, they will become ‘builders’ of words and sentences by using the phonetic tools they have learned throughout the year.

Unit 5
“We Speak for the Trees”-A Study of Living Things and Dr. Seuss" -February 27- April 24- 25 days
This six week unit invites students to explore living things with a focus on trees. They will continue to be scientists and explore the topic through non-fiction books, observations and their five senses.
They will be able to sort things into living/non-living categories and be able to verbally support their choices. The beginning of Spring and new life, as well as Arbor Day will also be explored.
In literacy, the students will be introduced to “The Lorax” as a fictional launch to ecology as well as an author study of Dr. Seuss. Students use of rhyme and phonological awareness will be strengthened and built upon as they begin to prepare for their transition to traditional kindergarten.
Simple math story problems tied into this unit will strengthen their number sense foundation.
